Language- On the front cover, the masthead is obvious as it is the largest part text on the page, as well as overlaying the main image, therefore asserting that the title of the magazine is most important. There is also the indication of which edition this is, in this case “autumn edition”.
The layout of the front cover includes the main image and story dominating one side of the page, then thumbnail images of featuring articles within the magazine across the other side of the page with captions so that the reader understands what the article is about. At the bottom of the page, there is a banner reading “plus”. This is teasing content for the reader, which is carried on in the content page so that the reader will read on.
The front page emphasizes the house style in terms of the colours used, which are purple blue and white, with the borders around the thumbnail photographs in this colour and the curved bars on the side of the page. The house style is not only the colour, but also can constitute as the font used. In my magazine, I used the font “Impact” throughout. This font is much bolder than the one I used in my draft; therefore I believe it is much more functional for the reader.
This house style is continued onto the content page, where the same curved lines are used on the page, as well as using the same style of blue on purple for the borders of the thumbnail images. The logo for the Wyke College is used on the bottom left of the page. This is an ident of the college.
Institute- The production of my magazine would be the college. This is made clear my all the content in the magazine directly aimed at the college, as well as including the ident for the college on the content page.
Ideology- The ideology that is behind the representation of my college magazine is about going against the typical stereotype , created by the older generations, that all teenagers are lazy and bone-idle, who never work to achieve anything. The use of positive captions on the photographs, such as “smiling students” and “positive results” goes against this typical stereotype of teenagers.
I deliberately used the background photograph with bright blue sky to show the positivity of the college community, reflected by the weather. This is known as pathetic fallacy which is usually used in terms of novels and literacy, yet I decided to use this on my magazine.
Audience- The audience for my magazine is obviously the students. The emphasis that the magazine is free should have been made. The fact that the magazine is free will benefit the students very much, as the 2nd years cannot afford to spend their EMA money for the magazine, as well as 1st years who do not receive EMA at all, would be able to read the magazine without using their important money.
Representation- The photograph I have used for the main image and main article in my magazine is a student at the college revising from an official revision book (I was careful to make the title of the book clear so therefore left nothing obstructing the front cover of the revision book). Combining this with the heading I have used, about students revising early, I have represented students positively, striving to achieve to do well at college.
