College Magazine Mock Up

The photograph of the student in the background is taken from the internet, as well as the other 2 thumbnails. The name YES! is an acronym for Youth, Evolving and Social, which are all positive connotations. The word YES is also promoting positiveness as well as opportunity. The exclamation mark shows enthusiasm and excitement.

Initial Ideas Prezi

Pricing and Publishing

Relating back to the choice of target audience, there is a good chance that the students attending Wyke College will be lacking in terms of finance. Therefore I have chosen to make my college magazine free. This will be appropriate as there is no intention of making money for the magazine and would therefore be a magazine open to every student who attends Wyke College.
I have decided that alike the college magazine I have researched; the magazine would be published seasonally, with 4 magazines every year. This would be suitable to the publishers of the magazine, who would also be students of the college, to research and create articles as well as getting on with their education at Wyke.

Target Audiance

Using Demographics and Psychographics, I have specified my choice of audience. Demographics are used to group using quantative data about their age, gender and Socio-Economic Group.   The age groups included in Demographics are:
·         15 and under
·         15-24
·         24-35
·         35-55
·         55 and over
As the majority of college students are aged between 16 and 18, none of these groups are specific enough to target, yet the closed group is 15-24 year olds. Because the students will be either male or female at the college, my magazine will be non-gender specific, appealing to both males and females.
In terms of Socio-Economic Groups (SEG), as the majority of college student will either be unemployed, part-time workers or receive EMA, they will fall into the E Socio-Economic Group E, where casual labourers, unemployed and state pensioners fall. As there will be a lack of finance for the students, I will price the magazine for free.
Psychographics are more about people’s views and personalities. This system will collect data called Interests, Attitudes and Opinions (IAO) variables. The VALS system (Values And Life Styles) can categorize in terms of physiological characteristics. There are 4 main categories:
·         Group driven by needs: Survivors, Sustainers
·         Group who are outer-directed: Belongers, emulators, achievers
·         Groups who are inner-directed: I-am-me, experientals, societally conscious
·         Groups who are outer & inner-directed: Intergrated
Overall, I have decided that my target audience will be those falling in the the E Socio-Economic Group (unemployed, possible part time jobs), refined the age group to specifically college students (16-18) and in terms of VALS, I will be aiming at interesting those both outer-directed and inner-directed. This gives a variety of audience, therefore could have articles discovering and explaining things such as different cultures and lifestyles to interest those who are inner-directed, also articles about students achievements and advice pages.

LIIAR Analysis of 3 Other College Magazine

The magazines of which I have chosen to analyse which will be the main competitors against my college magazine are The LC from Lewisham College (Autumn 2010), GX Magazine from Grimsby Institute and East Riding College magazine (Spring 2010).

The LC from Lewisham College:

Language:
The masthead is a bold, simple white stating the name of the magazine “The LC”. Behind the headings and anchorage is a MCU shot, followed by a heading “We meet choreographer to the stars Simeon Qsyea”. Underneath this heading there is a list of features. At the bottom right corner is an ident for the college, with a logo. There is no price on the cover, suggesting the magazine is free.

On the content page there is a list of content organised as the information and page number. There is one photograph above the table of content to highlight an issue followed by the page number. It would have been a better addition if the magazine had multiple photographs with page numbers, rather than a table of content. There is no obvious house style, but on the content page there is a combination of blue and pink writing.

Institution:
The publisher of the magazine is the Lewisham College as it is stated on the content page, emails and web pages for the students to address if they wish to join the team that write the magazine.

Ideology:

The LC magazine has a lot of content involving leisure activities such as dancing and sports in general. I believe that the magazine is attempting to promote the involvement of sport and activities to the audience, more specifically the students.

Audience:

The audience to The LC magazine is obviously students that attend the Lewisham College.  This is shown on the front cover, a heading stating “Find out what’s on around college”. There is also proof of the audience in the content page asking if any readers want to join the team that produce the magazine.

Representation:

The magazine represents the students at Lewisham College in a positive way. On the content page next to the table of content, there is an acknowledgement section, showing achievements of students, such as “Student Wins National Award” and “Volunteers’ Achievements Celebrated”.

East Riding College Magazine

Language:
On the front cover, the masthead is visible, big and bold. The colour scheme of black and white is very plain and boring. Small headings of different articles, not very visible. Photograph in the middle of the page to highlight main story,  yet not very good photograph (Long shot of students facing opposite way from the camera). Despite this, it is obvious that the students are in Berlin because of the anchorage and page number on the frame of the photograph. The logo for the college is visible in the bottom right corner of the page. The logo still adopts the black and white colour scheme, which I know is not actually the colours contained on the logo.

On the content page, there is still the black and white colour scheme, yet framing the table of content in green and white, which I know to be the colour of the logo for East Riding College. The magazine should have used this green and white on the logo on the front cover to give the magazine a house style colour scheme. As in The LC magazine, the content is organised in a dull table. There are photographs surrounding the table of content, yet it is unclear which article is related to which photograph. The borders around the photographs are uneven and inconsistent, making the magazine look untidy and unorganised.

Institution:
The institute that this magazine is published by is the college. One of the headings reads “ Student Reps” showing that the students from the college are the people that organise and publish the college magazine specifically for that college.

Ideology:
The East Riding College Magazine has a sense of community and involvement in fun activities which we can see on the front cover "Media Students In Berlin", as well as over on the content page on the thumbnail pictures, we see the students taking part in various activities.

Audience:
The audience of the magazine is students of the college. This is made clear by the photographs on content page, around the table of content. The photographs show students in various activities, such as a picture of one paintballing and one student with a camera.

GX Magazine from Grimsby Institute

Language:
The masthead of the Grimsby Institute magazine is big and bold, in white against the blue background making it stand out. The house style colours make the magazine look contemporary and modern with white against a bright blue background. The main image on the front cover is two people who represent students of the college, one male, and one female. The people are not images of real people but images with no facial details, no eyes, and mouth, like a stencil. The male image is stood with a white shirt on with the GX logo on with his arms crossed looking youthful. The female image however, is in the background and face is slightly covered by the masthead “GX”.  The pictures of none facial features, I believe is linked with one of the headings “Not Just A Pretty Face the model life of a glamorous Grimsby Institute student”. This is part of the anchorage for the main story. One of the headings about a Grimsby Institute visiting China includes a photograph of what looks like a Chinese city. The front cover also includes the Grimsby Institute logo. At the bottom of the page written in the same house style colours (blue and white) is a slogan reading “the word on the street…”.

The content page continues the contemporary house style colour scheme of blue and white, yet this time adding other various colours, especially to the table of content, which has a colour sequence to it. I believe that this is done to keep the reader interested rather than keeping the magazine font one plain colour.

Institution:
The publisher of the magazine is published by the student union of the Grimsby Institute. On the page opposite the content, there is a page dedicated to the history of the magazine.

Ideology:
The posture and positioning of the images on the front cover of the GX Magazine show a laid back and a sort of youthfulness about it, very much aimed at the target audience. This is similar to the posture of a stereotypical teenager, crossed arms e

Audience:
The audience of the GX magazine is, as in the other 2 magazines, the students of the college as well as students in the area. On the content page, there is a small paragraph explaining that the GX magazine is aimed at “young people”. This is a non specific to the audience, yet gives a general idea that the audience are students of some degree.

Choice of College for Preliminary Task

The college at which I have chosen to include in my college magazine task is Wyke College. Wyke College campus is a large open space with multiple buildings. The way I portray the students will be vital for the reputation of the college, therefore I will have to make my magazine articles positive and make sure I represent the college well.

My LIIAR Analysis of The Brief

LIIAR Analysis

Language-:
The Front cover of the College magazine will be a Masthead of the chosen magazine name, the main image (which will be a medium close up of an individual) and any anchorage relating to the main story (for example, captions, headings etc.). There will also so a content page that will be created which will be an organisation of images and page numbers relating to an individual story, as well as the main story. The housestyle will include 2, maybe 3 colours that will be used on the front cover and continued throughout. I will be using the colours white and light blue. My choice of colours is inspired by the ‘Grimsby Institute GX’ magazine that we were asked to look at as an example. I believe the combination of blue and white gives the magazine a contemporary look which is important to attract the reader’s attention. An ident could be included for the magazine, yet this would mean creating a logo consuming more time, yet with my idea of using Wyke as my publishing institution, their ident can be used. Intertextuality could be used to add a personal connection with the reader, possibly interjecting humour but this will rely on mutual cultural knowledge and understanding. As the target audience are college students, I could use a phrase or quote from a famous song or a television show such as ‘The Inbetweeners’ which is a popular television program among teens.

Institution:
The institute I am going to use to produce the magazine is Wyke. This would make the research of finding a college magazine publisher and would easily be able to use the Wyke ident. With using Wyke, I can therefore use the Wyke campus as the college that which i will take my photo.

Ideology:
The decision I have made for the main article of the college magazine is about revision and a discussion whether it is better to use books to revise or use technology to revise for examinations. The moral that I am wishing to discuss is that revision will help students achieve if they strive at opportunities to revise to gain better grades. This will gain a good reputation for the teens that study, which will conflict with the stereotype that all teenagers are lazy and disrespectful.

Audience:
The audience at which I will be targeting is obviously college students, yet more importantly the group of which students at college in UK. After compiling research, I have discovered that the majority of college students are between the age of 16 and 18. I also discovered that the majority of students are unemployed or have part-time jobs, showing a lack in finance. This is a decider that the price of my magazine will be free to all college students.

Representation:

The article about revision will portray the students and the college as determined and positive about their life at college. Obviously the choice of article will not appeal to all of the students at the chosen college, which is why my choice of other article headings is important, to try and attract a majority audience. As I have stated in my Ideology discussion, the stereotype of teenagers is that all teens are lazy and disrespectful. In my magazine, with my stories and main story, I will attempt to represent teenagers and students in a completely different way.

Brief For College Magazine Cover

Preliminary Task

Using DTP and a image manipulation program, produce the front page of  new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead, Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
